Uhm, I think you have to have a certain amount of “karma points” before your posts aren’t automatically downmodded. That could be it? I believe it’s there to keep the spammers out.

I’m not 100% sure – I just lurk reddit. That’s how it was explained to me by a coworker, though. So if it’s incorrect, blame him.

Well apart from the odd Stumbleupon spike triggered by kindly visitors (and when I say spike it’s probably the same as about half an hours traffic for you), I still haven’t found anywhere that consistent drives traffic to my cartoon site.

I’ll also be interesed if anyone has any ideas

So reddit thinks I’m a spammer. Rejection hurts, especially when it’s from a large faceless entity on the web.

Like I said, even at the best of times reddit hasn’t sent much traffic my way. Just shitty that my posts won’t even appear in the ‘new’ section. Thanks for the help anyway guys. Arjewtino, there’s no particular one I wanted on reddit, I guess I was just wondering if there was anything else out there that was similar…

Probably a better idea to just put a “post to reddit” link below each coupon and let your viewers do the submitting. You won’t get every one submitted but those that do get submitted will be more likely to gain traction. Plus, it’s more how those sites are supposed to work anyway and it’s less evil/spammy.

Good point Andy. Unfortunately I have totally forgotten how to create a link like ‘post to reddit’. A shiny penny to the one who reminds me how to do it!

leafprobably, i tried sending my cartoons out to do some street work, but they just ended up in a turf war and came back with a crack habit.

You can do it in a couple ways, you can put one of their buttons on the post, here’s their page about that:

In addition to the WordPress plugin I just sent you for all the major social media (digg, etc.), here are some other thoughts:

What’s your goal? Are you trying to build up traffic to your site so you can sell ads on your site more successfully, build up readership for an eventual book, build up viral success to make it easier to sell your cartoons to a syndicate, or what?

Could you use tags or categories to make your cartoons accessible in groups (religion, dating, aliens, science, movies, irony, science fiction, office, sexual, etc.)? Then you could promote RSS feeds just for those specific groups of cartoons. That would allow you to interest people who are in love with just one or two types of cartoons you do.

You could also insert code that people could use to insert either individual cartoons on their own blogs (people love free contents), email the cartoon to a friend, or display your latest cartoon as a thumb-nail size version in their sidebar. For the latter, see what I mean at http://andertoons.typepad.com/ — look for the small “Daily Cartoon – click to enlarge” in the sidebar. (They used to offer that as something people could place on their own blogs; not sure if they still do. But it’s a thought for something you could do.)

Or if you don’t want just anyone being able to spread the word about your cartoons, find blogs that you think would be a good fit for your cartoons and ask them if they’d like to run your cartoons.

I’d make sure any free use of your cartoons included copyright notice AND a link for people to click if they’d like to syndicate or buy your cartoon.

Or you could put together a print-on-demand paperback on Lulu.com for sale — having a book can’t hurt.

Join up with a site that will sell your cartoons for you. Some I found on a quick search are:

http://www.cartoonresource.com/

Of course, you’d have to pick the partnership carefully; a lot of these cartoon portals or syndicates are geared toward serving businesses that need presentation fodder, churches that need filler cartoons, etc. Your cartoons would need to find someplace that’s looking for the irreverent. )

You also could look for other venues to sell your cartoon-adorned merchandise. I don’t know if places like Etsy.com accept vendors selling non-handmade merchandise, but it’s worth asking — they supposedly get a good bit of traffic.

Looks like you got reported by enough users to be flagged as a spammer (I’ve now fixed it). It’s likely because all your submissions came from the same source (your personal site). There’s nothing wrong with self-promotion – I understand you’re trying to get exposure for your work – but the community tends to frown on it.

The best strategy would be for you to submit any good content you find online, along with your own. You’re obviously not a spammer, but our anti-spam system has to deal with quite a lot of spam, and it’s not perfect.

Your stuff is quite funny; hopefully you’ll give reddit another shot.

Carolyn and Alexis, I am blown away by your helpfulness! Thank you so much. Alexis, I think I’ll refrain from posting my own stuff on reddit, and will just use a reddit button on each cartoon. If readers want to share it, they’ll share it. If not, it’s probably not worth sharing! As you’ve pointed out Carolyn, there are plenty of appropriate avenues of self-promotion. You’ve given me a good amount to think about and I’ll let you know how I go with it!

I had the same problem with my site. At first I have to admit I “spammed” a little, I mean, it was pretty boring and un-motivational to have no visitors.

Then my posts just stopped appearing on the ‘New’ section of Reddit, just like with your site. I tried making a new account, even from another computer and my submitted posts still didn’t show on the site.

I recently decided to add buttons on my site so I wrote them on the ‘feedback’ section and they said it was a bug and they fixed it.

Making stuff easy for other people to bookmark for you is a great way to get socialy bookmarked! Other than that, try google for a few webcomic forums, sign up and have this site as your signature link! Post a few comics of your own and the traffic will come flooding in! I’ve already made a blog post about you to try and send a few people your way! (also posted a few links to your comics in my forum).

reddit’s been a big waste of time for me as well. It’s like stumbleupon, they only click in click out, no interaction. Not worth the traffic in my opinion. The best way to prostitute comics for me has been to comment on blogs. Look! I’m doing it right now!
